This is my new rudder got installed last year. now it's on the hard i found there is a play when i moved the rudder from underneath the boat. if you compare the two pictures with the catalina data sheet , i think the base of my rudder is missing the " lower bearing" , and that is the cause of the play.. Check for play: outboard rudders and rudders with a bottom bearing should be checked regularly for wear of pintles, gudgeons and other hardware by trying to rattle the rudder in its bearings. spade rudders are supported by bearings inside the boat, so push the bottom of a spade rudder side to side to check for tube wear or other bearing problems.. So, boat is in the heated garage, time for winter projects now that christmas is over. when going over the boat, i noticed that there is some serious rudder play going on. i am 99% certain that nothing was hit this past season, but it just really seemed like there was a lot of play side to side..
